A 500 error on the Branches settings page usually indicates a server-side issue, but it may help to determine whether it is repository-specific or account-specific.

A few things you could check:

1. Does the error occur in multiple browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) and in a private/incognito window?

2. Can other repository administrators access:

   • Settings → Branches
   • Rulesets
   • Branch protection rules

3. Does the issue occur only in this repository, or also in another repository you own/administer?

4. Are there any existing branch protection rules or rulesets that were recently modified before the error started occurring?

5. If you open the browser developer tools (F12) and check the Network tab while loading the page, do any requests return additional error details besides HTTP 500?

Since the error appears to be generated by GitHub itself, it may ultimately require GitHub staff investigation. Additional information such as whether the problem is repository-specific and whether other administrators can reproduce it would help narrow down the cause.
