Copilot Free Limit Reached While Finishing Personal Website– Upgrade Unavailable

Hello GitHub Support,

I’m currently using GitHub Copilot Free and I have reached my monthly chat message quota while working on a personal web development project.

I tried to upgrade to GitHub Copilot Pro, but the upgrade page shows the message:

“Plan upgrades are temporarily unavailable.”

I would like to clarify that I am an end user working on my own personal website, not a business or commercial project. Once I finish this website, I do not expect to continue using Copilot heavily.

Because of this, I wanted to ask whether there is:

any temporary option to allow a few more chat interactions,
a smaller or flexible upgrade option suitable for personal users,
or any workaround that would let me finish my current project.

I would really appreciate any help or guidance you can provide.

Hi,
The “Plan upgrades are temporarily unavailable” message is usually a temporary billing or platform-side issue rather than something related to whether your project is personal or commercial.

Unfortunately, GitHub normally does not provide extra Copilot chat messages once the free quota is exhausted, and there is currently no smaller short-term Copilot plan specifically for temporary personal use.

A few things you can try are:

Wait a few hours and try the upgrade page again
Try another browser or private/incognito mode
Verify that your payment method and billing region are supported
Check GitHub Status for any billing or Copilot service issues

If the upgrade page continues failing, contacting GitHub Billing Support is probably the best option because only they can check account-specific upgrade restrictions.

In the meantime, you could also continue development using alternatives like ChatGPT Free, local AI tools, or standard Copilot code completions if they are still available even after the chat quota limit.
